‘Clutter is the physical manifestation of chaos in the mind’ – Patrice Washington
It is a tradition in the Chinese culture that we clear out the clutter in our houses and give them a deep clean before the New Year. I don’t consider myself as a hoarder but I still managed to accumulate a load of stuff that to some degree prevented me from enjoying my space because the house felt disorganised and busy.
It was hard to part with stuff especially if things hold a sentimental value so a happy compromise is streamlining my memories to fit into one or two boxes that are more manageable than a house full of stuff.
In clearing out my stuff I found some books that I had double copies of so I started a book group with my friend and hopefully this will encourage me to read my hoard rather leaving it to gather dust. I also donated stuff to charity and made use of some forgotten / pre-loved things that incidentally I needed but couldn’t find or had forgotten about.
It was quite frustrating working through all the stuff as it was a quite time-consuming process but now it’s done - It feels great so I would encourage everyone to have a good clear out.
Going forward I definitely need to look at my priorities again and how I can leverage my time better to ensure my house never gets to that state again. Tidying up is a mundane task but it pays dividends in your personal effectiveness in life.
How many times have we all lost stuff, misplaced something because we put it in a different place?
I just want to close with a brief summary that has been inspired by some Patrice Washington videos:
First of all, I loved what she said about space being the ability to control and maximise your time. We need to adopt the mantra of time is money, organisation minimises time lost through looking for things or lost information.
When we are intentional about our time and keep our space in an orderly fashion, we refine our focus in life whatever that might be.
A compelling point she added was, ‘I take more precautions who I allow in my space, in order to protect the energy, peace and integrity of my space.’ I have to agree with this point and I realised that I do this on a subconscious level.
