This time of the year is typically
a time of deep reflections. Taking stock of where we are better equips us to do
better. This week’s blog post has been inspired by the quote below and I felt
compelled to unpack a response I gave, as it was particularly poignant for the
New Year.
‘If you don’t leave your past in
the past, it will destroy your future. Live for what today has to offer, not
what yesterday has taken away.’ (TheGiftbooks.com).
Someone asked the question – how do
we do this - and below is an open response to my take on the past. I am writing
as someone who was previously so broken that I lived out my brokenness, my
pain, wounds and sorrow. I was unable to see beyond the past and a feeling of
hopelessness washed over me daily.
Whenever you pick up a text book on
any matter, it usually seems so clear cut, neat, tidy, black and white. Whereas
in real life this cannot be further from the truth. Dealing with past failings
is no different. Typical phrases you often hear being said are: “time to move
on,” “let it go,” “forgive yourself and others.” The million dollar question is
how? A basic response would be it’s a choice and not a feeling but the past is
often still prevalent in some shape or form.
I personally struggled with the
past at great depths, despite my best efforts to live in the here and now. I
cannot remember the amount of times I just wanted to give in and give up on
life. The turning point for me was choosing to be a follower of Jesus, but even
this path wasn’t a quick fix. Moreover, it also came with its own challenges
that would have made it easy for me to stop trying. There was something about
Jesus that gripped me to continue to pursue Him.
Jesus has enabled me to learn to forgive and that I have been able to give my
bitterness to Him.
In doing so, I found solitude to
cherish the precious gift of life, in spite of life’s trials and tribulations.
I still struggle to forgive people. However, I have found peace and comfort in His
Word that has led me to be peaceful from within.  And that peace has transcended to my outside
world. I am living and no longer merely existing.
