I am a massive fan of Gok Wan’s work- I love his motto buy less, wear more and dress well for less. It really is a great read for those seeking general inspiration to those who have hit hard times personally and professionally. It so true that behind every success story then is a story before the story. I think we can all relate to being stuck in a job that has no prospects, which we care little for, because it’s not where our passion is. Going from one job to another and for it to not work out how we envisaged sounds all too familiar. Our real dreams seems out of reach and far-fetched because we don’t have the right connections and the list just goes on.  It’s easy then just to give up and to be stuck in a rut and before you realised the year’s just slips away at your fingertips. I think Gok Wan’s journey to fashion tells a very different story to our preconceptions and beliefs- he is proof that regardless how many times things doesn’t work out, if you keep trying it will eventually fall into place. For me what was truly inspiring and moving was he didn’t have any advantages in fashion- he was quite literally self-made! Gives hope to us all with all our hopes and dreams for our lives.

The main things I took away from the book was:
-       At the time the events in his life seems hopeless, a drop out, going from one dead end job to another. When he thought he found his love the course didn’t work out and he had to go home, back to where he started. He also had an eating disorder and personal battles of who he was. It probably seems that he was going through the motions of existing and not living because he has yet to fulfil his passion and his purpose.
-       Life is rarely a straightforward path, there would be many twists and turns before you reach your divine destiny. It takes time to find out who you are, where you are going and what are you going to do for a living. This could be frustrating but success is very much about the journey as it is about the end result. The skills Gok Wan learnt along the way (where it probably seemed pretty dire at the time) all came to play when he hit the big time. In other words the journey often serves a purpose to your destiny, just keep focused and never give up.

WOW- it echoed my own life, wherever there seems to be progress, life takes an un-expectant turn and I found myself having to go back to square one again. To the point I was tired and exhausted to be starting over again and again. Each time this happens my mental, physical and spirit began to deplete.

Feeling like a lost cause was just the beginning of my troubles, as I practising Christian the bible says that there is a purpose to your pain. Based on the Gok Wan story- he is a genius working with women- not only his flair but his ability to connect with his audience through our hang-ups to body confidence issues, the empathy he has is what makes him so likeable because he had similar battles himself. This has reminded me of an earlier post on the singer- Jewel- ‘our pain, losses and struggles doesn’t have to make us damage and bitter people, it can make us more compassionate, empathetic and extraordinary people’.  This sums up the Gok Wan story pretty well- his life has been anything but easy, the adversity he faced he turned into his greatest strength, he has flourish against the odds and turned into one of the greatest exports of the UK fashion industry.

I am so proud to have a fellow Chinese advocate on TV- I just wish one day I can make enough money to hire him. I see him as a great role model for young people, when you experience any type of challenges/ trauma through no fault of your own, it can lead you down a dysfunctional path. The strength that he demonstrated and being the success story that he is today shows through, grit, determination and drive anything is possible. Despite his environment which no doubt felt like a battle ground he never gave up on life and that has to be a message worth sharing with today’s youth especially.

I hope you enjoyed the post, may I wish you an inspiring week ahead.

Best wishes

Highly Effective People Strives For Excellence

Hello I hope you enjoyed the last 2 special blog posts about Parentalk and Abuse. I felt it was important for me to use this platform to raise awareness on topics that could make a positive impact on future generations. This week is back to talking about life, inspiration, motivation and ideas-this post was actually inspired by a rather dysfunctional event. Every day we have many distractions, which can keep us from our destiny if we chose to be consumed by it.  Our dreams has to be bigger than our current reality to cause us not to sweat the smaller stuff and that involves letting some things or people go. The difference between effective and not-effective people is how we chose to channel it. Below is how (after the initial annoyance) I done it. Just to put this into context- the individual(s) concerns were unable to take accountability for their actions / errors, instead what I observed was a misuse of power and the slow demise of an outdated organisation. Enjoy...

A seemingly insignificant act has the potential to change the world...

I loved learning about the story of Reformation Day. The significance centres on how the Bible became accessible for everyone to read - historically the general public wasn’t allowed to read it, only priests or those considered anointed within the church were allowed to read it. The priests read the Bible in Latin, so for most people, it wasn’t even possible to read it. God’s word was entrusted into the hands of those in power, who were deemed qualified to understand it.  What the priests were teaching, was not actually in line with what the Bible said, as one monk, called Martin Luther found out. He started to read the Bible for himself out of pure frustration.  According to the teachings of the priests, believing in God seem to be just to be an endless set of rules and it left him feeling as if he could never be good enough for God. Little did he know at the time, he was about to birth a revolution that quite literally changed the world. This set him on a path of ...

A book review – Part One - Dealing with Disappointment by John Hindley

This book was a relatively easy read with the simple idea that leaves you to question: is life just one big disappointment?  In many ways it does seem so; the author delves into different areas of disappointment in our lives. I suspect most if not all are relatable to everyone. Firstly, the author says we actually should be disappointed by life, as things are not as good as they should be. We live in a frustrated and frustrating world; the frustration is because of the fallen world when sin entered humanity. We all carry this divinely inbuilt sense that the world should and could be better. The book goes on to say that on the other hand, we are sometimes too disappointed with life.  We expect satisfaction from other areas of lives to overcompensate for this.  When this satisfaction is denied, it starts an over-disappointed cycle. For example, I came across a thread where the mum wrote in and expressed disappointment in her children’s grades, which led her to ques...
