How to Get Out of your Own Way by Tyrese Gibson

In a nutshell this book tells the story about how Tyrese got out of his own way, despite the challenges and obstacles in his life, which he had plenty of. The book is framed into defining moments in his journey that attributed to his success from knowing what we are exposed to in childhood becomes our norm and it was by making these connections, he made the conscious decision of not to carry this burden. Further on he also shares some key insights that he learnt from his mentor's such as, ‘you can often tell how far you will get in life by the 5 people you spend the most time with' Will Smith.

As I said before, Tyrese is one of my biggest influences, the style of this book is very down to earth, raw and compelling because he has lived through the very obstacles that some might argue that it stopped them from being successful. Tyrese described this book, as part biography and part inspiration, it is very dynamic in content and context. I have read and apply the information consistently and in a few short month’s I can say this book speaks the truth and it has been one of my main inspiration behind my new way of thinking and being.

In the words of Tyrese, ‘change your mind, change your life’ he also added to truly make a change in your life, you have to apply the information- it sounds so obvious be it’s not uncommon to hear people, who has read X number self-development books and still in pretty much the same situation. I wanted to focus on two key chapters in the book that has helped me in building a better foundation and I loosely talk about how I applied the information.

How Much Do You Love Yourself?

I had a poor self-image and was far too self-critical to achieve anything meaningful in this current state of mind. Changing my mindset through self-love, valuing self and embracing my strengths has all attributed to a better state of mind in the spirit of how to get out of your own way. Tyrese mantra is self-love is the cure to self-hate, setting boundaries or bottom lines as he calls it, ensuring you have taken responsibility for your own happiness. In other words how much are you willing to tolerate things and situations, before it starts being a detriment to your own well-being? If you don’t love yourself the chances are you will be more willing to put up with dysfunction, drama and negativity that can stop you from being your best and achieving a higher self, because ‘if you love yourself better, you are going to want better’ Tyrese Gibson.

Are You the Master of Your Own Environment?

We are all a master of our own environment because it starts with what you think, is how you feel and what you do is what you get = your reality, thoughts turn to things.  Mentally setting up yourself for failure, consumes your mind and spirit into feeling stuck.  Tyrese calls this ‘being a master of your own environment and do it unapologetically’, we need to take personal responsibility and accountability in ensuring our lives are free from drama, dysfunction, situations and people that doesn’t add anything to our lives hence the removal of these factors are essential in creating an environment where you can flourish. Negativity breeds, as it focuses upon problems rather than solutions therefore it can paralyse the mind into ultimate powerlessness, an inability to think beyond the current reality.  Also dwelling on the past, worrying about the future and not living in the here and now creates a vicious cycle because our reality today is a result of our past thoughts and or (lack of) actions. So not living in the here and now will only contribute to more or less of the same in tomorrow’s reality.

When all the negativity is removed in some shape or form, you will be in the right space to have clarity in your vision and dreams. To achieve success or to get out of your own way ‘you have to stay obedient to the vision’ Tyrese. We are all surrounded by distractions on a daily basis, whether it be negativity, people and situations that require our time and energy. It is a discipline to stay focused amongst the noise and choosing your battles wisely, not everything you come across needs addressing. Seemingly small issues can add up and overtime it can weigh you down and drain your spirit. Time is a limited resource, so be smart and selective in the ways you use your time because how we use it today will shape our future.

In one of my earlier posts re Tyrese motivational videos on Youtube- he talks about if you are not happy with your life, it’s time to take a look at why your reality is the way it is because you are more in control that you realise or like to realise for some. For example, do you expect a different result when you are dealing with people that are the heart of your unhappiness? If the very people that are supposed to be helping you but not delivering, then why are they still with you? It’s time to get off the pity potty as Tyrese calls it and start to take control of the life. Your life is a reflection of how you are feeling from how you look to how successful you are.

How to get out of your own way-KIMI’s journey so far:

- As I began to embrace the ideas of positive living from noting down inspiration to thinking in quotes and putting new information into practice. I truly believe that we are never limited by our circumstances, only by our own mindset. Tyrese’s story and many others including Chris Gardner and Steve Pemberton proves this to very true indeed.
- Attending relevant courses to address some of the dormant issues has enabled me to become more forward thinking and have clarity, over what I want and what I don’t want in my life.
- I regularly attend church to heal the past, restoring myself spiritually and learn life skills, such as practising inner peace daily, which ensures nothing steals my joy.

As a result of the above I am now in a much better state of mind, happier in self and have the courage and confidence to go beyond my personal expectations. I can see by applying new information, changing the way I view myself and my physical environment-I could potentially create a life beyond recognition.

I highly recommend this book and I would love to hear your stories / comments. I hope you found this summary helpful and the very best of luck in achieving your next level.

Best wishes

KIMI

Highly Effective People Strives For Excellence

Hello I hope you enjoyed the last 2 special blog posts about Parentalk and Abuse. I felt it was important for me to use this platform to raise awareness on topics that could make a positive impact on future generations. This week is back to talking about life, inspiration, motivation and ideas-this post was actually inspired by a rather dysfunctional event. Every day we have many distractions, which can keep us from our destiny if we chose to be consumed by it.  Our dreams has to be bigger than our current reality to cause us not to sweat the smaller stuff and that involves letting some things or people go. The difference between effective and not-effective people is how we chose to channel it. Below is how (after the initial annoyance) I done it. Just to put this into context- the individual(s) concerns were unable to take accountability for their actions / errors, instead what I observed was a misuse of power and the slow demise of an outdated organisation. A book review – Part One - Dealing with Disappointment by John Hindley

This book was a relatively easy read with the simple idea that leaves you to question: is life just one big disappointment?  In many ways it does seem so; the author delves into different areas of disappointment in our lives. I suspect most if not all are relatable to everyone. Firstly, the author says we actually should be disappointed by life, as things are not as good as they should be. We live in a frustrated and frustrating world; the frustration is because of the fallen world when sin entered humanity. We all carry this divinely inbuilt sense that the world should and could be better. The book goes on to say that on the other hand, we are sometimes too disappointed with life.  We expect satisfaction from other areas of lives to overcompensate for this.  When this satisfaction is denied, it starts an over-disappointed cycle. For example, I came across a thread where the mum wrote in and expressed disappointment in her children’s grades, which led her to ques...

A seemingly insignificant act has the potential to change the world...

I loved learning about the story of Reformation Day. The significance centres on how the Bible became accessible for everyone to read - historically the general public wasn’t allowed to read it, only priests or those considered anointed within the church were allowed to read it. The priests read the Bible in Latin, so for most people, it wasn’t even possible to read it. God’s word was entrusted into the hands of those in power, who were deemed qualified to understand it.  What the priests were teaching, was not actually in line with what the Bible said, as one monk, called Martin Luther found out. He started to read the Bible for himself out of pure frustration.  According to the teachings of the priests, believing in God seem to be just to be an endless set of rules and it left him feeling as if he could never be good enough for God. Little did he know at the time, he was about to birth a revolution that quite literally changed the world. This set him on a path of ...
